Pakistan announce squad for World Scrabble Championship

LAHORE: Pakistan team for the World Scrabble Championship (WESPAC) 2023 has been announced. The championship will be played at the Westgate Resort, Las Vegas, US from July 22-25. As many as 300 of the world’s finest players are expected to showcase their talent at the biggest stage.
Tariq Pervez will lead the team that comprises Pakistan’s No 1 Waseem Khatri, Muhammad Inayatullah, Hassan Hadi Khan, Hammad Hadi Khan and Hasham Hadi Khan.
Four of Pakistan’s top players would miss the event as their visas could not be issued in time. The winners of the 2021 and 2022 World Youth Championship are both from Pakistan (Syed Imaad Ali and Ali Salman but the youngsters were unable to participate due to their tough study schedule.
Team leader Tariq Pervez expressed disappointment at the loss of key players ahead of the World Championship but hoped that the remaining players will still do well as four of the five players have won international tournaments in the past.
This will be the first in-person world championship being held after the COVID outbreak. The 2021 championship was played online and hosted by Pakistan.
