MUMBAI: Suryakumar Yadav produced a captain’s knock under pressure to guide India to a 29-run victory over the United States of America in their Group A encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.
India were put into bat after the USA won the toss and immediately found themselves in trouble on a lively surface under lights. Abhishek Sharma (0) was dismissed without scoring in the second over by Pakistan’s origin bowler Ali Khan and the early momentum was firmly with the American bowlers when Ishan Kishan fell (20) soon after.
Shadley van Schalkwyk then ripped through India’s middle order with a devastating spell, removing Tilak Varma (25) and Shivam Dube (0) in successive deliveries to leave India reeling at 46 for four inside the powerplay. With the crowd subdued and wickets tumbling, India looked in danger of posting a below-par total.
Suryakumar Yadav, however, remained unfazed. The Indian captain rebuilt calmly before unfurling his full range of strokes, scoops, ramps and inside-out drives to wrest back control. He found little support as Rinku Singh (6) and Hardik Pandya (5) were dismissed cheaply but continued to manipulate the field and punish anything loose.
Axar Patel (14) briefly assisted during a 41-run stand for the seventh wicket, allowing Suryakumar to shift gears. The right-hander brought up his half-century off 36 balls and accelerated sharply at the death, striking boundaries off both pace and spin. India added 43 runs in the final four overs with Suryakumar carrying his bat to finish on 84 not out, lifting India to 161 for nine.
Van Schalkwyk was the standout for the USA with figures of four for 25 while Harmeet Singh claimed two wickets and Mohammad Mohsin bowled an economical spell.
Chasing 162, the USA suffered an early collapse against disciplined Indian bowling. Mohammed Siraj struck twice in his opening spell, removing Andries Gous (6) and Saiteja Mukkamalla (2) while Arshdeep Singh dismissed captain Monank Patel for a duck as the Americans slumped to 31 for three at the end of the powerplay.
Milind Kumar (34) and Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37) stabilised the innings with a cautious partnership, rotating strike and targeting the shorter boundaries. Milind’s dismissal following a successful review halted the recovery, and although Krishnamurthi and Shubham Ranjane briefly revived hopes with aggressive strokeplay, the required rate continued to climb.
Siraj returned to dismiss Ranjane with a crucial lbw decision while Axar Patel removed Krishnamurthi and Harmeet Singh in quick succession to break the chase. Arshdeep cleaned up the lower order as the USA fell to 132 for eight at the close of their innings.
India’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout, conceding just 31 runs in the powerplay and consistently striking at key moments to deny the USA any sustained momentum.
The win handed India two valuable points to begin their Group A campaign while the USA were left searching for answers after a promising bowling performance was undone by a lack of batting depth.
