LAHORE: Argentina’s men’s hockey team produced a commanding performance to defeat Pakistan 5-1 in the FIH Hockey Pro League on Sunday with a balanced scoring display that underscored their strength in attack and depth of talent.
Playing at the Santiago del Estero Hockey Club, the hosts raced into a lead inside the opening quarter through Nicolás della Torre, whose powerful penalty-corner drag flick found its way past the Pakistan defence in the seventh minute to give Argentina an early advantage. Bautista Capurro doubled the lead soon after when he was on hand to deflect home from close range following an incisive run and precise cross from teammate Joaquín Toscani in the 15th minute, leaving Pakistan with plenty to do at 2-0 after the first quarter.
Argentina continued to press in the second quarter and Capurro added his second of the evening with a simple finish in the 21st minute after a turnover in the Pakistan defence allowed Maico Casella to tee up the striker’s tap-in, extending the hosts’ cushion to 3-0.
Pakistan responded early in the third quarter when Waheed Ashraf Rana displayed individual skill, driving into the Argentine circle and unleashing a powerful shot high into the net to halve the deficit. But Argentina quickly regained control as the hosts resumed their fluid attacking rhythm.
The fourth goal for Argentina came when Tadeo Marcucci released an incisive pass to Tomas Domene, whose backhand effort forced a save and the rebound was expertly converted by Tobias Martins, restoring a three-goal margin in the 37th minute. The scoring was completed by a late strike from Nicolas Torres della completing the convincing 5-1 scoreline.
Argentina’s victory was built on efficient penalty-corner execution, incisive attacking play and a disciplined defensive structure that restricted Pakistan’s opportunities. The hosts, now firmly in the hunt for crucial points in the long Pro League season, maintained pressure throughout and rarely allowed Pakistan to gain a foothold in the contest.
Pakistan, competing in the Pro League following the withdrawal of New Zealand, the FIH Nations Cup winners, earlier in the season, have found the transition to competing against top-ranked teams challenging. Despite Rana’s moment of individual excellence, the visitors struggled to sustain attacking pressure and were unable to convert possession into clear goal-scoring chances.
“Tactically we executed our plan well,” Argentina coach Lucas Rey said after the match. “We rotated intelligently, controlled possession and were sharp in front of goal. Performances like this give us confidence as we prepare for the next phases of the competition.”
Pakistan head coach Tahir Zaman reflected on the loss with an emphasis on learning from high-level matches, acknowledging the gulf in quality on the day but stressing the developmental value of facing world-class opposition. With the result, Argentina strengthened their position in the Pro League standings while Pakistan will look to regroup and target improvements ahead of their remaining fixtures.
This was the fourth successive loss for Pakistan. Pakistan had started with a heavy 5-2 defeat at the hands of Netherlands. The Green-shirts then were beaten by Argentina 3-2 before Pakistan were mauled by Netherlands 7-3 in the third show.
Now after an enough break Pakistan will resume their next phase of their Pro League campaign against Australia and Germany in Hobart, Australia.
Pakistan will face Australia on February 10, followed by their match against Germany on February 11, Australia on February 13 and Germany on February 14.
