HOBART: Australia conquered Pakistan 3-2 in a tightly contested men’s FIH Hockey Pro League match in Hobart on Tuesday, riding on a brace from Tim Brand and a late decisive goal by Blake Govers to seal the win.
Playing at the Tasmania Hockey Centre, Australia took an early grip on the contest, striking twice in the opening quarter through Brand. The forward opened the scoring inside the first minute and doubled the lead soon after, capitalising on sustained pressure as the hosts dominated circle penetrations early.
Pakistan responded in the second quarter through Ahmad Nadeem, who pulled one back with a well-taken field goal to leave Australia leading 2-1 at halftime. The visitors grew into the match, tightening their defence and limiting Australia’s scoring chances in the third quarter which ended scoreless.
The final quarter saw Pakistan push aggressively for an equaliser. Sufyan Khan converted a penalty corner midway through the fourth quarter to level the scores at 2-2, rewarding Pakistan’s improved attacking intent and efficiency from set pieces.
However, Australia had the final say. With just under three minutes remaining, Blake Govers struck the winning goal, converting from a penalty stroke after sustained pressure inside the circle, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Australia finished with 28 circle penetrations compared to Pakistan’s 11, underlining their attacking dominance despite Pakistan’s resilience. The hosts earned nine penalty corners but failed to convert any, while Pakistan scored once from three penalty corners.
Brand finished as Australia’s top scorer with two goals, while Govers added the crucial late strike. For Pakistan, Nadeem and Khan were on target in a performance that showed growing composure against one of the Pro League’s strongest sides.
The result gives Australia a narrow but valuable victory in the 2025–26 FIH Hockey Pro League (Men), while Pakistan will take encouragement from a competitive showing that pushed the hosts until the final minutes.
This is the fifth straight loss for Pakistan after they were beaten twice each by Argentina and Netherlands in Argentina last year.
