LAHORE: Yawar Hussain, a senior bureaucrat from the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS), has taken charge as the Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), the country’s central sports regulatory body announced.
The appointment comes at a critical juncture for sports administration in Pakistan which has faced mounting pressure to modernize its infrastructure and improve international competitiveness. Hussain, a Grade-20 officer, was reassigned from the Government of Punjab by the Establishment Division of the Government of Pakistan. He will serve at the PSB, which operates under the Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC), on a deputation basis.
In his first official address upon assuming office, Hussain outlined a strategy focused on grassroots development and systemic reform.
“Our primary focus will be on strengthening institutional support for athletes, coaches, and federations,” Hussain said. “We must prioritize talent identification and the provision of modern facilities if Pakistani athletes are to compete successfully at regional and international levels.
“The PSB has long been criticized by sports analysts for bureaucratic delays and failing to adequately support athletes outside of cricket, the country’s dominant sport. Funding shortages and substandard training facilities have frequently hampered the development of talent in sports like hockey, squash, and athletics.
Hussain stated that the board would actively pursue partnerships with provincial governments, national sports federations and educational institutions to build a more sustainable sporting pipeline. Board officials and administrative staff welcomed the transition, expressing optimism that Hussain’s extensive administrative background in the Punjab province would help streamline the agency’s operations.
