Pakistan vs Netherlands : A wake-up call victory

By Waqar Maroof
Pakistan’s hard-fought victory over the lower-rated Netherlands in the T20 World Cup turned out to be more than just two points for me. It was a clear wake-up call. While the Green-Shirts managed to cross the line, the remaining matches will truly judge the real strength and consistency of this Pakistan side.
Known worldwide as the most unpredictable team in international cricket, Pakistan faced unexpected resistance in their opening match of the tournament. Credit must be given where it is due: Faheem Ashraf played a crucial role under pressure, smashing 29 runs off just 11 balls and steering Pakistan towards a much-needed victory. Without his late fireworks, the outcome could have been very different.
Looking ahead, the upcoming clash against the USA on February 10 presents a golden opportunity for Pakistan. I believe this match can help the players regain rhythm and confidence which is vital before entering the Super Eight stage. Strong performances here can set the tone for the remainder of the tournament.
From my perspective, the team management should consider making a few tactical changes in the next games to assess the bench strength. A batsman like Fakhar Zaman deserves a fair chance instead of being sidelined while Khawaja Nafay could be tried in place of Usman Khan.
Captain Agha Salman also needs to be more proactive with his bowling choices. Faheem Ashraf should be utilized more effectively as a bowler and Saim Ayub deserves a longer spell. Against the Netherlands, Saim bowled only one over yet picked up two wickets. Had he been introduced earlier, the margin of victory could have been far more convincing.
Shaheen Shah Afridi, although a proven match-winner, is still not at his best. I feel he needs to focus more on his fitness and rhythm to regain his lethal form which will be crucial in high-pressure matches ahead.
While the USA and Namibia may appear to be weaker opponents on paper, Pakistan cannot afford to take them lightly. Dominant and clinical performances against these sides will not only boost confidence but also create psychological pressure on stronger teams in onwards stages of the tournament.
In tournaments like the T20 World Cup, momentum is everything and Pakistan must seize it now.
