Training out of comfort zone helps me, says Fakhar Zaman

By our correspondent
LAHORE: Pakistan’s prolific left-handed batsman Fakhar Zaman on Saturday said that doing training outside his ‘comfort zone’ has always helped him in raising his performance.
“The preparation counts a lot if you are out of touch and I believe in it. It counts whether I have prepared for an event within my comfort zone or out of the comfort zone,” Fakhar told a group of reporters here when asked about his turn around in form following hard time in the PSL beginning.
“I felt and I also discussed with some people before going for the PSL that I had prepared within the comfort zone and so I struggled and when I prepare out of my comfort zone and make training difficult for me then I perform much better,” Fakhar said.
“When I was going to South Africa in 2021 I had missed New Zealand tour due to covid and I had two months at my disposal and in those months I had trained hard and I was more confident. I had told my fielding coach Aftab Khan that I feel that I will hit double century on that tour. I need more preparation always,” he said.
Fakhar said that as a professional he is ready to bat at any position.
“As a professional I am ready for any batting position but I am a sort of player who talks to the management and skipper that what is their plan for me and whatever is their plan I follow that. In T20 I normally bat at No 4. Its right if situation-wise management opts to change my position but what I have known is that I will play at No4,” Fakhar said when aked about his batting position.
“I plan to click at every game and you know in T20 cricket it’s risky. I want to score quick runs and such runs which could benefit the team. In T20 cricket I don’t think form matters a lot. Yes if you open the innings then form counts more as you play in the circle and opt for proper cricketing shots. In the middle order if you sometime manage a shot it goes straight into the hands of the fielder. In T20 middle order players also need luck more. Yes I am happy that I am scoring runs and I would be happier if my runs benefit the team,” Fakhar said.
Fakhar said that they need to enhance their strike rate.
“I personally believe that our strike rate needs improvement if we take into consideration modern day cricket and we are working on that. It all depends on mind set and our mind set has changed and in future you will see more improvement in these things,” Fakhar said.
“I know that I can bat at 150 strike rate and will try to improve my strike rate,” Fakhar said.
Fakhar feels the situation-wise reschuffling in batting order is very important for a skipper in T20 cricket.
“I rate high such a skipper who takes tough decicisons and takes risk. Yes, skipper should have powers and he should tell you that today situation requires some reschuffling. I think reschuffling is important keeping in view game scenario,” Fakhar said.
“When Azhar Mehmood came he shared with us stats. It’s your mindset which matters a lot. There are so many things which have been told to the players and you will see a massive improvement in these things,” said Fakhar when asked about rearrangeing the top order in order to ensure quick runs are scored in the start.
