LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a show-cause notice to fast bowler Naseem Shah for an alleged breach of his central contract and the board’s media regulations, the PCB said on Friday.
Naseem, who is currently representing a Rawalpindi-based franchise in the Pakistan Super League, has been formally notified under the PCB’s disciplinary framework and asked to submit his response within a stipulated period.
“The show-cause notice has been served in accordance with the PCB’s disciplinary framework,” the board said in a statement. “Upon receipt and review of his response, the PCB will decide on any further action in line with the regulations.”
While the PCB did not explicitly detail the nature of the violation, it is understood that the notice has been issued following a controversial tweet from Naseem’s official twitter-handle during the PSL opener between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen on Thursday.
The now-deleted message appeared as a quote repost of a PCB update featuring chairman Mohsin Naqvi welcoming Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz at the venue.
“Why is she treated like the queen at Lords?” the message read, questioning the treatment of Maryam Nawaz at the event, drawing widespread attention on social media.
After the tweet got viral and spurred a huge controversy Naseem later issued a clarification saying that the post was not made by him. He claimed that his account had been hacked and was only recently recovered after a security breach.
“This account of Naseem was recently hacked but now recovered successfully,” the statement read, distancing the player from the controversial remarks.
The PCB reiterated its stance on maintaining discipline and professionalism among centrally contracted players.
“The PCB remains committed to upholding professional standards, contractual obligations, and the integrity of the game,” the statement added.
Disciplinary proceedings of this nature can result in penalties ranging from warnings and fines to suspension, depending on the severity of the breach and the player’s response.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of player conduct in franchise leagues, where balancing personal expression and contractual responsibilities continues to be a sensitive issue for cricket boards globally.
