KOLKATA: Michael Leask produced a match-defining all-round performance as Scotland crushed Italy by 73 runs in their Group C clash at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Eden Gardens on Monday.
Scotland posted an imposing 207 for four, built on a commanding opening stand and a devastating late assault, before Leask returned to rip through Italy’s middle order with four wickets for 17 runs to bowl them out for 134 in 16.4 overs.
After being put in to bat, Scotland were given a solid platform by George Munsey and Michael Jones. Munsey anchored the innings with a fluent 84 off 54 balls, striking 13 fours and two sixes, while Jones played a supporting role with 37 from 30 deliveries as the pair added 126 for the first wicket.
Italy briefly checked the scoring when Grant Stewart dismissed Munsey in the 14th over, and JJ Smuts removed Jones soon after but Scotland’s momentum never stalled. Brandon McMullen injected urgency with an unbeaten 41 off just 18 balls, clearing the ropes four times, while captain Richie Berrington chipped in with 15.
The final overs belonged to Leask. Promoted late in the innings, he smashed an unbeaten 22 from five balls at a strike rate of 440, including two fours and two sixes, as Scotland plundered 57 runs from the last four overs to surge past the 200 mark.
Chasing 208, Italy were immediately under pressure. Justin Mosca was dismissed first ball, caught by Munsey off Leask, setting the tone for a difficult evening. JJ Smuts (22 off 11) and Harry Manenti (37 off 25) counter-attacked briefly while Ben Manenti top-scored with a fighting 52 from 31 balls but wickets fell at regular intervals.
Leask was the chief destroyer, claiming four wickets in his four overs including the key scalps of Justin Mosca, Harry Manenti, Grant Stewart and Gian-Piero Meade. Mark Watt provided support with two for 24, and Italy lost their last six wickets for just 21 runs as the chase unravelled.
Italy were eventually dismissed for 134, with captain Wayne Madsen unable to bat after being absent hurt, sealing a comprehensive victory for Scotland and earning Leask both the Player of the Match award.
