Germany demolish Pakistan 5-2 in FIH Pro League

By Alam Zeb Safi
HOBART: Germany struck twice in a dominant third quarter to defeat Pakistan 5-2 in their FIH Pro League match at the Tasmania Hockey Centre on Wednesday, maintaining their clinical edge in front of goal and capitalising on penalty corner opportunities.
Christopher Rühr set the tone early, firing Germany ahead in the sixth minute with a well-taken field goal after sustained pressure inside the circle. Pakistan weathered further attacks but conceded again in the second quarter when Tom Grambusch converted from a penalty corner during a flurry of chances midway through the period.
Benedikt Schwarzhaut added a third soon after also from a penalty corner, as Germany’s set-piece efficiency began to tell. Pakistan, however, responded before halftime through Ammad Muhammad, who finished from open play to reduce the deficit and keep his side in contention.
Trailing 3-1 at the break, Pakistan struggled to contain Germany’s attacking waves in the third quarter. Malte Hellwig restored Germany’s three-goal cushion with a field strike in the 41st minute and Raphael Hartkopf followed shortly after with another open-play effort to make it 5-1.
Pakistan’s resistance showed late in the fourth quarter when Sufyan Khan converted from a penalty corner with just over three minutes remaining, but the comeback proved beyond them.
Germany dominated the attacking statistics, registering 26 circle penetrations to Pakistan’s 11 and matching their opponents with five penalty corners, converting two for a 40% efficiency rate. Pakistan managed one goal from five penalty corners.
Rühr, Hellwig and Hartkopf were on target from open play for Germany, while Grambusch and Schwarzhaut scored from penalty corners. For Pakistan, Ammad netted a field goal and Khan added a set-piece strike.
Both teams finished with 11 players on the pitch, although each received one yellow card. Germany also missed a penalty stroke in the contest.
This is the sixth successive loss from Pakistan in the league so far.
