GLASGOW: Pakistani boxer Fatima Zehra secured a historic bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, becoming the first female boxer from her country to win a medal in the history of the multi-sport event.
The fighter completed her landmark campaign in the women’s 60kg lightweight category. Her historic run concluded following a semi-final defeat against a formidable Canadian opponent.
The Canadian boxer established early dominance during the opening exchange, securing a 4-1 lead on the judges’ scorecards in the first round.
As the pressure intensified in the second round, the referee intervened to stop the contest. While the stoppage handed victory to the Canadian athlete, Zahra’s progression to the semi-final stage automatically guaranteed her the bronze medal under tournament regulations.
Zahra’s path to her podium finish was highlighted by a dominant performance in the quarter-finals. She faced Jordan Wilson of New Zealand, securing a victory to secure her place in the final four.
The achievement marks a critical turning point for Pakistan’s boxing landscape, bringing home the country’s first Commonwealth Games boxing medal since 2014.
