Pakistan’s miserable run in FIH Pro League continues

ANTWERP, Belgium: Spain extended Pakistan’s miserable run in the FIH Hockey Pro League on Saturday, handing the South Asian side their 12th consecutive defeat in the competition with a commanding 4-2 victory at the Belfius Hockey Arena.
The result marks Pakistan’s fourth successive defeat in the current leg of the tournament, leaving them desperate for answers as they prepare to travel to England for their next set of fixtures. Despite a highly efficient penalty corner routine from Pakistan’s Abu Mahmood, who netted twice, Spain’s overwhelming attacking dominance ultimately proved the difference. The European side registered a staggering 38 circle penetrations compared to Pakistan’s 13, forcing 11 penalty corners over the four quarters.
Following a cagey, goalless opening quarter, the match burst to life in the second period. Spain broke the deadlock, but Pakistan responded through Mahmood’s clinical drag-flick to leave the teams deadlocked 1-1 at half-time.
Spain asserted their authority in the third quarter, turning their relentless circle pressure into goals. Forward Nicolas Alvarez spearheaded the Spanish attack, scoring twice from open play to finish with a brace. Although Mahmood struck again for Pakistan to keep his side within touching distance at 3-2 heading into the final 15 minutes, Spain’s defense locked down.
Alejandro Alonso and Pepe Cunill also found the back of the net for Spain, converting two of their 11 penalty corner opportunities to ensure there was no late drama. Discipline was a minor issue for both sides in a physical encounter, with Spain’s Rafael Vilallonga and Bruno Font receiving green cards while Pakistan’s Ghazanfar Ali was also cautioned. However, it was Pakistan’s inability to create chances from open play, failing to register a single field goal that sealed their fate. Pakistan will look to arrest their downward spiral as they depart Belgium to face England and India in London next week.
