Pakistan launches professional volleyball league in landmark 2026 expansion drive

LAHORE: Pakistan is set for one of the most ambitious years in its volleyball history after the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF) unveiled a sweeping 2026 calendar featuring major domestic championships, international tournaments and the launch of the country’s first professional volleyball league.
The federation said the packed schedule reflected Pakistan’s growing standing in Asian volleyball and its broader push to professionalize the sport, expand youth development and strengthen the country’s international competitiveness.
Among the headline events is the 55th National Men’s Volleyball Championship, scheduled to be held from May 19-23 at Pakistan Ordnance Factory (POF) in Wah Cantt, where 16 provincial and departmental teams will compete for the national title.
The centerpiece of the calendar, however, will be Pakistan’s hosting of the Central Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship from July 3-10 in Lahore, a tournament carrying official world ranking significance and expected to attract some of the region’s strongest teams.
Participating nations are set to include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, Maldives, Kyrgyzstan and Nepal, with PVF officials confirming India’s participation.
The event marks another major step in Pakistan’s efforts to position itself as a regional sporting hub after years of limited international hosting opportunities due to security concerns.
“This championship reflects Pakistan’s increasing importance in Asian volleyball and demonstrates our capability to organize world-class international events,” the federation’s chairman Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob said at a press briefing at the federation’s office in Lahore.
The tournament is also expected to boost regional sporting ties and provide local fans with rare access to elite international volleyball competition on home soil.
In another landmark move, the federation announced the launch of the Pakistan National League (PNL), the country’s first professional franchise-based volleyball competition modeled on successful commercial leagues such as cricket’s Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The inaugural edition of the PNL will run from July 19 to Aug 5 in Lahore and will feature six franchise teams, each including two international players alongside leading domestic talent.
The federation hopes the league will create new commercial opportunities for players, increase fan engagement and establish a sustainable professional structure for the sport in Pakistan.
Pakistan’s national teams are also set for an extensive international campaign during the year.
The country’s Under-18 side will compete in the AVC Boys’ U18 Volleyball Championship in Manama, Bahrain, from July 12-18 as part of the federation’s long-term youth development strategy.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Under-17 team will participate in the FIVB Boys’ U17 World Championship in Doha, Qatar, from August 19-29 after qualifying through a gold medal-winning performance at the 2025 Asian U16 Volleyball Championship.
The tournament will feature 24 nations, including volleyball powerhouses Brazil, Italy, Japan, Poland, Iran and the United States.
Pakistan’s senior men’s team is also scheduled to compete at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4 where it will face some of Asia’s strongest volleyball nations.
PVF officials said the broad calendar highlighted the federation’s long-term vision of expanding volleyball’s reach nationwide, improving player development pathways and establishing Pakistan as a serious force in regional volleyball.
“The year 2026 promises to be a defining chapter for Pakistan volleyball,” Yaqoob said, adding that the federation remained committed to “bringing pride to the nation through sporting excellence.”
