It’s time for the ultimate showdown

By Rakesh Pandey
The stage is all set for a grand and blockbuster finale at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as India and New Zealand prepare to face each other in the title clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 8. Just one year ago, on the 9th of March 2025, these two teams clashed at the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy at Dubai, where India lifted the cup beating the Kiwis by four wickets. What makes this clash even more interesting is the fact that the two teams have an even rivalry in the finals of major ICC formats. They also met at the World Test Championship (WTC) finals in 2021 at Southampton, where New Zealand won the finals by eight wickets to lift the historic title. The scores are 1-1 at the moment. And the T20 World Cup final will determine the winner among these two rivals.
Over the years, both these teams have built a competitive rivalry in the ICC tournaments. They both have a calm approach under pressure with strong tactical leaders in the form of Surya and Santner. Both posses strong bowling attacks and have very aggressive batting line-up.
New Zealand’s semi-final hero Finn Allen said that his team’s thumping semi-final win over South Africa was a “huge confidence booster” ahead of going for its maiden T20 World Cup title. Opener Allen hit the fastest-ever T20 World Cup century, off 33 balls, to give his side a crushing nine-wicket win over South Africa. He blasted ten fours and eight sixes as New Zealand raced to its victory target of 170 with 7.1 overs to spare at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens.
The Kiwis, who are known for their fighting spirit at the middle, discovering match-winners from out of nowhere and refusing to give up until the last ball, will be going into their sixth ICC final in 11 years.
On the other hand, host nation India, the defending champions, looks favorites to win and defend the title. Playing in the home conditions and in-front of the home crowd gives added advantage to India.
Opener Sanju Samson, who had lost his spot in the Indian team due to lack of runs not long ago, has come back roaring with scores of 97 not out in a virtual knockout against the West Indies followed by 89 against England in the semi-final to power India to 253/7, one of the highest totals ever recorded in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
India’s only concern going into the finals is the form of other opener Abhishek Sharma and their front line spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Sharma, the number one batter of the shortest format of the game, is yet to come on his own in this world cup. He seems to be struggling to get back to form. But his captain and coach have full faith in him and who knows, he could just have saved everything for the finals! We have seen in the past also that big players play big in the finals. Varun’s bowling in the last two matches against the West Indies and England went a bit offline, where the batsmen targeted him. He lost a bit of his magical touch in the last two games going for 40 and 64 runs respectively in his four overs. But the finals will be all-together a new match. He has been a match winner and will definitely bounce back.
Apart from Samson, Kishan, Tilak, Surya, Dube, Pandya and Axar Patel, all are in sublime form at the moment, and the fiery and ever dominant Boom Boom Bumrah in your playing XI, gives you the upper hand and everything you need for a win.
Interestingly, these two teams have never met in the final of an ODI World Cup. However, they have faced each other in knockout matches. New Zealand famously defeated India in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final, while India had the last laugh in the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final, securing a dominant victory to reach the final.
All in all, it will be an exciting clash in the finals, and the fans will get to witness an ultimate showdown between the two most deserving teams. My money is for the defending champions India….. GO GET IT!
