LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has launched a formal investigation into all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz after he tested positive for a recreational substance during the 2026 T20 World Cup.
The 32-year-old cricketer was notified of the result following a sample collection by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the tournament held in Sri Lanka and India. While the substance has been classified as recreational rather than performance-enhancing, the PCB has convened a disciplinary committee to oversee the inquiry.
According to sources Nawaz, a veteran of nearly 100 T20 internationals, has denied the allegations and is expected to challenge the findings. A secondary test has been scheduled for April 30 to verify the initial result.
The investigation has already impacted Nawaz’s international commitments. Surrey County Cricket Club terminated his contract for the upcoming T20 Blast in England, shortly after the PCB had initially granted him a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for the stint.
Nawaz has been a regular fixture in Pakistan’s limited-overs squads, contributing as a left-arm spinner and lower-order batsman. If the positive result is upheld, he could face a significant ban from all forms of competitive cricket. He is representing Multan Sultans in the ongoing PSL.
