COLOMBO: As was expected persistent drizzle, which got heavier as the time progressed, washed out the opener of the Super Eights of the ICC T20 World Cup between Pakistan and New Zealand at the Sri Lanka capital without a ball being bowled with both sides sharing one point each.
The drizzle started just after toss with skippers of both sides were yet speaking and ground staff rushed to cover the pitch and squares.
Despite a couple of hours of wait things did not improve as the drizzle got heavier as the time progressed and it compelled the umpires to take a tough call.
The outcome left both nations in tight corner and they will need to do their best in the coming matches to earn the coveted semi-finals spots.
On Friday Pakistan’s training session was also cancelled due to rain. Salman Ali Agha had won the toss and elected to bat first.
Pakistan had brought in Fakhar Zaman in place of Khawaja Nafay while New Zealand made three changes by also bringing their skipper Mitchell Santner.
Pakistan will now face England on Tuesday and Sri Lanka on Saturday while New Zealand will meet Sri Lanka on Wednesday and England on Friday.
