Luke Ronchi to act as Islamabad United head coach

By Alam Zeb Safi
LAHORE: Islamabad United have appointed former New Zealand international Luke Ronchi as their new head coach, the Pakistan Super League franchise said on Tuesday, marking the return of one of the most recognisable overseas players in the league’s history.
Ronchi, a fan favourite during his playing days with Islamabad United, takes over the role ahead of the upcoming HBL Pakistan Super League season. The franchise said the appointment reflects its long-standing philosophy of promoting leadership from within and maintaining continuity with the values that have defined the team since its inception.
Widely regarded as one of the most impactful overseas players to have featured in the PSL, Ronchi was known for his aggressive batting at the top of the order and his ability to deliver in high-pressure matches. His performances played a key role in some of Islamabad United’s most successful campaigns and helped shape the franchise’s identity around fearless, modern T20 cricket.
“Luke Ronchi is Islamabad United through and through,” team owner Ali Naqvi said in a statement. “He’s one of the most iconic and impactful overseas players this league has ever seen, and his bond with Islamabad United is unique. As we say, once a sheru always a sheru.”
Naqvi added that Ronchi’s understanding of the team’s culture and standards made him a natural fit for the role. “He understands what it truly means to represent Islamabad United. We’re excited to welcome him back, this time as head coach.”
Ronchi said the appointment carried special significance given his history with the franchise.
“Islamabad United has always felt like home to me,” he said. “The bond I share with this team, the owners, the fans and the entire ISLU family is genuinely special. To return now as head coach is a huge honour.”
He said Islamabad United’s emphasis on fearless cricket, strong character and a winning mindset would remain central to his approach. “I’m excited to carry that legacy forward and help develop the next group of leaders and match-winners for this great team,” Ronchi added.
The franchise said Ronchi’s move from former player to head coach underlined its commitment to long-term stability and leadership development, with several ex-players having previously taken on senior roles within the organisation.
In addition to his PSL experience, Ronchi brings international coaching exposure, having worked within New Zealand’s high-performance setup. Islamabad United said his time in the national team environment provided him with valuable insight into elite preparation, player development and modern coaching methods.
The combination of Ronchi’s familiarity with the PSL, his connection with Islamabad United’s fan base and his international coaching background makes him well placed to guide the team into the next phase of its campaign, the franchise said.
Islamabad United are among the most successful teams in PSL history, and the club said it expects Ronchi’s appointment to help maintain its competitive edge in the evolving T20 landscape.
