Injury forces Pakistan’s top sprinter to stay away of World Championship

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s fastest woman Tameen Khan has withdrawn from the World Athletics Championships due to injury.
“It is regretted to share that the fastest woman of Pakistan Miss Tameen Khan has withdrawn from the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025 due to injury,” a senior official of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) confirmed to this correspondent.
“AFP had secured a slot for Tameen Khan to represent the country in the 100-meter sprint, where some of the world’s fastest women including Sha’Carri Richardson and Julien Alfred are registered to compete. Miss Tameen Khan was scheduled to leave for Tokyo on September 9, 2025, but unfortunately sustained an injury during a practice session three days ago,” the official added.
Following a series of tests and an MRI scan, doctors have advised Tameen to undergo therapy and rest for at least two weeks. Sources revealed that the sprinter fell on the track while training at the PAF Sports Complex in Peshawar.
With Tameen now ruled out of the global event, all eyes will turn to Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, who will be chasing his maiden gold medal.
Arshad, who stunned the world with his massive 92.97m throw at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has been training in Lahore in recent days. He recently returned from London where he underwent successful surgery and rehabilitation for a left calf injury.
While such injuries typically take six to nine months to heal Arshad has shown remarkable progress. A few days ago, his UK-based doctor, Dr. Ali Sher Bajwa, visited Lahore to evaluate his condition and was impressed with Arshad’s fitness and dedication during training.
Although Arshad remains under close medical observation, his participation in the World Championships would be a significant achievement. He previously won silver at the 2023 edition in Budapest.
The World Championships will commence on September 13, with Arshad set to begin his campaign on September 17 in the qualifying round. The javelin final will be held on September 18.
