Pakistan end UEFA campaign with narrow loss to Azerbaijan

SHYMKENT, Kazakhstan: Pakistan’s Under-16 side bowed out of the UEFA Development Tournament with a 1-0 defeat to Azerbaijan on Thursday, despite a spirited and largely dominant display at the BIIK Sports Complex in Shymkent.
Pakistan controlled much of the contest with energetic pressing and cohesive build-up play but were undone late in the match when Azerbaijan’s Nazim Aliyev struck from close range in the 77th minute. The goal came against the run of play after Pakistan lost possession in midfield, allowing Azerbaijan to capitalize on a swift counterattack.
The result left Pakistan at the bottom of the standings, following earlier losses to hosts Kazakhstan and Russia. Nevertheless, head coach Mohammad Essa praised his team’s performance and highlighted the value of competing in their first UEFA-sanctioned event.
“We played really positive football today with good attacking and build-up play,” Essa said. “This is a learning tournament for us, with Pakistan participating in a UEFA competition for the first time. The boys showed a lot of spirit and determination.”
Pakistan started brightly, pressing high and combining effectively through midfield, limiting Azerbaijan’s time on the ball. The introduction of striker Danish Masih in the second half added attacking impetus, with Pakistan creating several chances but failing to convert.
Their task became more difficult in the closing stages when defender Hamza was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute, reducing Pakistan to ten men. Despite pushing forward in search of an equalizer, they were unable to break down Azerbaijan’s defense, which held firm to secure the win.
“With more exposure, I have no doubt we will continue to improve,” Essa added. “I thank PFF president Mohsen Gilani for arranging this opportunity for us.”
While the results did not go in Pakistan’s favor, the tournament offered valuable international experience for the young squad as they look to build for the future.
