Usman Khan (80*), Abdullah Fazal (88) guide Karachi Blues to 285-6 on day-1

Put into bat in the QT final Karachi Blues suffer middle order hiccup before Usman's defiant knock steadies the ship

By Alam Zeb Safi
LAHORE: Karachi Region Blues pieced together a disciplined and resilient batting display to finish the opening day of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final at 285-6 in their first innings against Sialkot here at the Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.
Karachi Blues recovered from a mid-session wobble as Usman Khan’s unbeaten 80 steadied the innings after Sialkot Region’s pacers threatened to seize control at the iconic venue.
Sialkot Region captain Usama Mir elected to bowl first, banking on early movement from a fresh five-day surface. His decision appeared justified when senior pacer Hasan Ali and right-arm quick Mohammad Ali extracted lively seam deviation in the first hour, keeping tight lines and frequently beating the bat. Yet Karachi’s openers showed enough composure to blunt the new ball.
Wicket-keeper batsman Saad Baig provided an early momentum with crisp drives and well-timed cuts, striking eight fours in a fluent 39 before falling lbw to Hasan Ali. His dismissal at 80 on the board briefly stalled Karachi’s rhythm and the wicket of Shan Masood (13), trapped lbw by Mohammad Ali only 14 runs later gave Sialkot further encouragement.
Abdullah Fazal, however, anchored Karachi’s innings with a patient and technically assured 88. He outlasted probing spells from both Mohammad Hasnain and Hasan Ali, raising a valuable half-century and forming the backbone of Karachi’s first innings. His knock contained 10 fours and a solitary six, exhibiting resolve during a tricky middle passage.
Sialkot struck twice in three balls when Hasnain removed Haroon Arshad for 15 and captain Saud Shakeel for a duck, halting Karachi at 125-4 and momentarily shifting momentum.
The tone of the day changed in the final session. Usman Khan counter-attacked with controlled aggression, producing a composed 80 not out off 107 balls. His innings blended authoritative drives and assured footwork against spin, especially targeting anything overpitched. Alongside him, Abdullah Fazal added 98 for the fifth wicket stand before the latter was undone by sinner Usama Mir, held by Mohammad Huraira against the run of play.
Hasan Ali returned for a probing late spell, removing Rameez Aziz for 22 but Karachi closed the day stronger, aided by Kashif Bhatti’s unbeaten 11 in support of the well-set Usman.
Sialkot’s attack worked hard without sustained penetration. Hasan Ali finished with 2-75 while Mohammad Hasnain’s 2-70 included crucial breakthroughs but Karachi’s measured approach left the final evenly poised heading into Day 2.
Play resumes Tuesday at 10am, with Karachi aiming to push beyond 350 and Sialkot seeking early morning breakthroughs to reclaim command of the contest.
