WAPDA, Army enhance their semi-finals chances with two straight wins in quarters

LAHORE: Defending champions WAPDA and Army have enhanced their chances of making it to the semifinals of the Engro 52nd National Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship by winning their two matches each in the quarter-finals stage being played on league basis here at the Punjab Sports Gymnasium Hall on Wednesday.

WAPDA routed Railways 3-0. Though Railways lost the match in straight sets they fought valiantly and at some stages they were ahead of strong WAPDA. But the experienced side of WAPDA overpowered them with the scores of 25-15, 25-11, 25-19. Earlier WAPDA had also faced good opposition from KP before sealing a 3-0 win with the scores being 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.

Army, the last year runners-up, crushed Higher Education Commission (HEC) 25-18, 25-15, 25-12. Earlier, Army also won their first match of the quarter-finals stage beating Punjab 3-0. Last night, in the last match Navy laboured hard to beat Higher Education Commission 3-1 with the scores being 25-13, 25-14, 24-26, 25-18.

Two more matches are to be held late this night. The match between PAF and KP is in progress and later Navy will meet Punjab. Meanwhile, on Thursday, semi-finals line-up will be cleared.

Thursday’s schedule:

Railways v KP 2pm; HEC v Punjab 4pm; WAPDA v PAF 6pm; Army v Navy 8pm.
