England beat Pakistan 2-0 in 1967 three-match Test Series; Asif Iqbal-Intikhab Alam 190 ninth-wicket stand memorable

After having faced a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of England in the five-match Test series in 1962 on English soil Pakistan visited for the third time to England for a three Test-match series in 1967 which Green-shirts lost 2-0.

On the tour Hanif Mohammad, the legendary batsman, led Pakistan while England were skippered by Brian Close. Both Hanif and Close are no more in this world.

The first Test held at Lord’s ended in a draw. Ken Barrington hammered 148 and Tom Graveney blasted 81 to guide England to 369 in their first innings. Saleem Altaf, Asif Iqbal and Mushtaq Mohammad picked three wickets each.
In response, Hanif Mohammad led from the front, showed enormous patience and commitment to score 187 off 556 balls to take Pakistan to 354 all out and just conceded 15 runs lead. Hanif hammered 21 fours in his superb knock. Asif Iqbal made 76. New-ball partners John Snow and Ken Higgs claimed three wickets each.
D Oliveira then scored 81 as England declared their second innings at 241-9 to set 257-run target for Pakistan who scored 88-3 in 62 over at stumps.

Left-arm spinner Naseem-ul-Ghani got three while Asif Iqbal and leggie Intikhab Alam claimed two wickets each. In Pakistan’s second innings opener Khalid Ibadullah showed great character as situation demanded from him. He faced 155 balls during his 32-run knock. Mushtaq Mohammad faced 100 deliveries for his 30. Barrington took 2-23 in 13 overs.

In the second Test at Nottingham England whipped Pakistan by ten wickets to take 1-0 lead. Pakistan were skittled out for only 140 in their first innings with Saeed Ahmed making 44 and Mushtaq scoring 29. New-ball partners Higgs (4-35) and Arnold (3-35) did the main damage. In response, England posted 252-8 declared to gain 112-run lead with Barrington scoring 109. Asif Iqbal and debutant Niaz Ahmed took two wickets each.
Pakistan then were folded for 114 in their second innings to set England just three runs target which they achieved from 2.1 overs. Saeed Ahmed fought a lone battle, scoring 68. Left-arm spinner Derek Underwood wrecked Pakistan batting with 5-52 in 26 overs.

In the third Test at The Oval England floored Pakistan by eight wickets to seal series 2-0. Mushtaq Mohammad struck 66 off 200 balls to enable struggling Pakistan to post 216 in their first innings. Pacers Arnold (5-58) and Higgs (3-61) did the work for the hosts. England then rode on the heroics of Barrington (142), Graveney (77) and Titmus (65) to post 440 all out to gain 224 runs lead. Mushtaq Mohammad took 4-80 and Asif Iqbal captured 3-66.
Pakistan then were folded for 255 to set only 32 runs target for England who raced to that in 8.2 overs after losing two wickets with Asif Iqbal taking 2-14.
At one stage Pakistan were reduced to 65-8 in their second innings. Asif Iqbal (146) and Intikhab Alam (51) played unbelievably well by adding 190 for the ninth wicket stand to prevent Pakistan from utter destruction. Asif hammered 21 fours and two sixes in his 244-ball knock. Intikhab cracked six fours from 122 deliveries.  Higgs was the main wrecker as he claimed 5-58, finishing the game with excellent figures of 8-119.
