LAHORE: Pakistan’s premier javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem today was extended rousing welcome upon his arrival from Tokyo where he stunned the world by finishing fifth in the Olympics which concluded on August 8.
The javelin thrower Arshad and his coach Syed Fayyaz Hussain Bukhari were garlanded after they were received by the president of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) Major General (retd) Mohammad Akram Sahi, Secretary General Mohammad Zafar and Punjab Sports Minister Rai Taimoor Khan Bhatti. A large number of fans and his family members were waiting outside the Allama Iqbal International Airport.
His mother and father were also present for hugging their son who made Pakistan proud by becoming the first athlete of the country who qualified for the finals of any event in athletics in the Olympic history. The AFP president Sahi drove the car carrying Arshad outside the airport where a huge crowd was waiting to pay tribute to the national hero. When they saw Arshad they started shouting Arshad Nadeem Zindabad, Arshad Nadeem Zindabad.
Arshad’s father Mohammad Ashraf was extremely happy when he hugged his son. Arshad fell on the feet of his mother and failed to control his emotions. His mother consoled him. From his hometown Mian Channu a convoy of 13 XLI corollas had come to Lahore to welcome Arshad. He was then taken to his hometown Mian Channu where large number of fans welcomed him. He was then taken to Khanewal. His brother Mohammad Waseem told this correspondent that the atmosphere of Mian Channu and Lahore was reverberating with the shouting of people, saying Arshad Nadeem Zindabad . Waseem, who works in Nestle company, said that he would next time win medal for Pakistan in the Olympics.
In the qualification stage of the Tokyo Olympics javelin throw event Arshad had topped his Group with a throw of 85.16 metre. However in the finals he failed to do his best and eventually finished fifth.
