HARARE: And eventually Zimbabwe recorded first win in 16 games against Pakistan when they defeated the visitors by 19 runs to level the three-match T20I series 1-1 here at the Harare Sports Club Ground on Friday.
With the series fate to be decided on Sunday with the third T20 at the same venue, Zimbabwe also broke the nine-game winless streak in T20 circuit. It was also their first win at home since beating India in 2016.
Set to score 119 Pakistan failed to click and were folded for a mere 99 in 19.5 overs, the lowest unsuccessful chase for the visitors. Only Babar Azam (41) did well with the bat in the process when run-rate kept mounting. Babar hit five fours from 45 balls. Danish Aziz (22) and Mohammad Rizwan (13) were the only other batsmen who entered into double figure.
In the last two overs Pakistan needed 32 and 20 in the last over. Luke Jongwe, who had made comeback in Zimbabwe side in this series after a long five-year gap due to injuries, produced the best figures of 4-18 which is the best so far from any Zimbabwe‘s bowler in T20 cricket. Leg-spinner Ryan Buri ably backed Jongwe with figures of 2-21 in four overs.
Earlier Zimbabwe scored 118-9 with opener Tinashe Kamunhukamwe top-scoring 40-ball 34, striking four fours. Regis Chakabva made 14-ball 18, hammering one six. Mohammad Hasnain (2-19) and Danish Aziz (2-29) were the most successful bowlers. Arshad Iqbal made a fine debut, taking 1-16 in his quota of four overs. Luke Jongwe was adjudged as player of the match.
