HARARE: Knowing well the issues of the middle order in white ball cricket in recent successful series in South Africa and Zimbabwe Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq on Tuesday said that something urgent would be done to overcome middle order issues as World Cup is approaching.
“We have to address the middle order issues in white ball cricket as soon as pssible as World Cup is approaching. We will have to address it urgently,” Misbah told a virtual news conference just hours before Pakistan team’s return via a chartered flight.
“England series this summer is very important and we will need to address the issue of No5 and No6 slots,” the head coach said. “We used almost all best performers who did well at domestic levels and in the PSL and National One-dayers and I think they were given enough chances. But I would say that they need to work on their basics. Unless their basics are improved they cannot succeed in any format,” Misbah said.
Misbah was happy with his brigade’s successful series in South Africa and Zimbabwe. “Its a matter of happiness that our both series remained successful in terms of results. These were much needed wins. And when you win against South Africa in their conditions it instills confidence in the whole unit, and team management,” Misbah said.
“On Zimbabwe tour we did well in tests and especially the openers were impressive. Imran Butt played a very good innings of 91 and so did Abid Ali who batted extremely well. Azhar Ali hit century and so did Fawad. Hasan Ali was outstanding and the way Nauman performed has created a hope that in future we are going to have a very good test combination. Shaheen Afridi remained impressive and in white ball cricket Haris Rauf and Hasnain were excellent. Faheem Ashraf bowled well in South Africa. We rested him for the last test against Zimbabwe here to give a chance to Tabish Khan who had done so well in domestic cricket as we wanted to test him without breaking the combination of the team,” Misbah said.
He said that Babar Azam is improving as a skipper with each passing day, saying, series win will further boost his confidence and it will improve his decision-making.
Responding to a question regarding Shoaib Malik’s recent statement that Pakistan needs white ball coach Misbah said it is the domain of the PCB, saying, what is the guarantee that any foreign coach would be successful.
When reminded about his critics Misbah said that let them burn their blood, saying, he could only pray for them.
